Dictionaries are the most practical tool in teaching and learning languages. Containing a large data pool of words along with their meanings, it is the best resource to know the meaning of a word. Most of the dictionaries available also give the definitions and pronunciations. Dictionaries can be specific and general. Other types of dictionaries are Bilingual dictionaries, Dictionaries of Synonyms also known as Thesaurus or Rhyming Dictionaries. With a good dictionary, you can look up the meaning of words, find the translation of a word etc. The Little Oxford English-urdu Dictionary is published by Oxford and is an abridged version, translated and compiled by Shanul Haq Haqqee, a lexicographer, and scholar of the Urdu language. The dictionary contains over 40,000 entries and about 50,000 definitions.
About the Author
Shanul Haq Haqqee was an Urdu writer, poet, translator, broadcaster, critic, lexicographer and linguist from Pakistan. Born in Delhi, he completed his Master's in English Literature from St. Stephen's college, Delhi. He was associated with the Urdu Dictionary Board for 17 years.
