Opens in a chill morning, Winston smith is a member of The Party, the ruling government of Oceanina for a long time. He works in charge of revising history at the Ministry of Truth, the Party's propaganda arm. He is not a big fan of the Party and starts writing a journal criticising the Party and its powerful leader Big Brother, which if found by the Thought Police leads to death. Winston also starts a love affair with Julia who also works at the ministry and they spend time in a rented room at an antiques shop where they believe it to be safe.

Winston then befriends O'Brien whom he believes to be an agent of the secret organisation against the Party but soon after the Thought Police captures Winston and Julia in their room by the room keeper and O'Brien who is bought Thought police agents.
