Sponsored by the Church Missionary Society, he established Kashmir's first dispensary in Srinagar, later founding a temporary hospital. Elmslie taught local medical classes and treated various conditions, earning the nickname "Padre Doctor Sahib" among locals. Despite facing challenges, he laid the groundwork for future medical missionaries. He also published the first Kashmiri-English dictionary and advocated for training native medical evangelists. He passed away due to health complications in 1872.
