Description

A group of people are invited to stay on an island by a rich host, U.N.Owen, and his wife. They arrive, only to realize that their hosts are not there but have left an old couple, Ethel and Thomas Rogers, to look after their guests.
The eight guests are strangers to each other, and they have never met before. All the guests find in their rooms a framed copy of the nursery rhyme, Ten Little Soldiers. The theme of the poem is how each of the ten soldiers are eliminated one by one.
The eight guests who stay in the island are Philip Lombard, Vera Claythorne, Lawrence Wargrave, Emily Brent, General MacArthur, Doctor Armstrong, Anthony Marston, and William Blore.
When they get together for their first meal in the strange house, they see a set of ten soldier toys on the table. As they are drinking coffee, a gramophone record starts playing. It is played by Thomas Rogers, according to his employer's instructions.
The record accuses each of the guests and the Rogers of a crime. The ten people generally acknowledge awareness about the incidents mentioned, but deny their involvement in them. Following these mysterious incidents, their worst fears come true when Anthony Marston chokes to death, just like the first little soldier in the nursery rhyme.
The guests realize that they have all been enticed to walk into a trap. They also realize that they have been marked, and one by one they are taken down, in a manner eerily similar to the fate of the soldiers in the rhyme.
As their numbers are being reduced, the survivors try to find a way out, and find out who the killer is amongst them. Every one of them is a suspect, and only the dead are innocent.
This is a chilling masterpiece from one of the best mystery writers, Agatha Christie. The book was originally called Ten Little Niggers, but was renamed taking into consideration the offensive nature of the former title.
