A story about the adventures of two friends, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, tells a tale of emotional ups and downs, loss, friendship and courage. The protagonist Greg and his friend Rowley start their adventure during the summer holidays. Kicked out of a country club for complaining incessantly, they start a lawn curing service which is a failure. On Greg’s birthday, both boys buy fish from a pet-store. Unfortunately, Rowley’s pet piranha eats Greg’s angelfish. A dog is the next to be adopted, which brings more chaos to Greg’s life. A long disastrous event follows, with bungling on the beach and one calamity after another, ending in Greg calling the police because he thinks his father of going to sell him to an orphanage. The confusion is finally put to rest by the revelation that Frank was merely planning to give the dog to grandma.
The author navigates through sudden twists and innumerable ups and down to create a laugh riot which children are sure to relate to. A glimpse into the mind of children struggling to come to terms with the adult world, and a happy ending makes the Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, the perfect vacation read for children.
