Book Description
The Catcher in The Rye is an English novel written in 1951 by J. D. Salinger. The book is narrated from the perspective of Holden Caulfield who is currently in a Mental Institution after being expelled from High School. The story is about how Holden deals with becoming a man after his struggles during childhood. The story tells us all about his casual relationships, his encounters with Harlots and the struggles he faces in dormitories. You come to know a lot about his earlier life because of the frankness with which he tells the story. The novel is regarded as one of the best ever and has been hailed as a master piece although it has been questioned for its use of profanity and the Sexual content. It deals with issues like identity, belonging, connection, and alienation.
About the Author
J. D. Salinger was an American writer who began writing short stories at a very young age and grew to become one of the most respected and revered novelists. He served in the Second World War and in 1951 wrote his highly popular and critically acclaimed novel, The Catcher in the Rye which even today sells 250,000 copies a year. The book proved to be controversial because of the profane language and its sexual content but even today it is very popular as the numbers have proved. He married twice and passed away recently in 2010, he is survived by his second wife Colleen and his son Matt.
