Coty—the beauty products manufacturer of fragrances, cosmetics and skin care was founded by François Coty in 1904. François’ first fragrance, La Rose Jacqueminot, blended florals and led to L’Origan and Chypre in 1905 and 1917, both soft and sweet. His genius was in marketing coveted perfume bottles. L’Origan is still available at discount stores today, but its modern composition belies the vintage. Big smells beget big business, and Coty became a subsidiary of Pfizer from 1963 to 1992. In 2005, Coty acquired the fragrance division and wafted to the height of world's largest mass-marketed fragrances. For the Corsica-born perfumer—Joseph Marie François Spoturno—who believed fragrance belonged to every socioeconomic class, today’s Coty comes full circle.
