Description

Counselling Children With Psychological Problems is a result of the authors 40 plus years of experience as a psychologist and the training of mental health workers, volunteers, postgraduates in Clinical Psychology and teachers since 1976. Summary Of The Book The mental health of children in most parts of Africa and South Asia is not given the importance that it deserves. In the Indian scenario, very often graduates with or without a degree begin counselling children even before acquiring the required knowledge or experience. Added to this is the fact that developing nations do not have a regulatory body with regard to the practice of counselling. Counselling Children With Psychological Problems is the authors attempt at enabling counsellors and all those who work with children to have easy access to information dealing with the methodological and practical aspects of their work. It details the nature, causes, assessment and treatment of psychological problems that commonly affect children. Counselling Children With Psychological Problems is divided into four parts. Part one introduces the reader to the classification of psychopathology, developmental psychology, assessment and different therapies. Part two discusses the common psychological problems that affect children like developmental problems, emotion and learning disorders. The author also touches upon the topics of psychosomatic disorders and psychoses. Part three talks about counselling children using different mediums such as art and also psychodynamic and supportive approaches. Furthermore, the reader is also provided with information on working in different settings such as families, groups and schools. Part four gives the reader an understanding of the right course of treatment with regard to the disorder and the best suited technique in dealing with it. Case studies provided in this section enable the reader to help better their understanding. Each of the parts in the book ends with self-evaluation exercises and summaries. Included in the book is the Developmental Psychopathology Check List (DPCL) pioneered by the author.
