Synopsis
Greg Heffley opens the Diary of A Wimpy Kid Book 10 ( Old school) with a description of his current life, in the context of a discussion he has had with his family about their experience of living with electronics. The story then moves to Greg’s experiences in school, and the introduction of his grandfather into the family circle. We see Greg’s elder brother venture into his first job to pay for the extras his father refuses him, the reaction of the father to the pressure of having his father living with him, and the emotional needs of the grandfather who turns to online dating to compensate for separation from his girlfriend. The family goes to a camping trip with disastrous results, and the narrative ends with them huddling into the family car to return to their normal lives,
Perceiving the trials and tribulations of modern living through the eyes of a child, Jeff Kinney paints a picture of a family trying to balance the several pressures they are under and coexist, looking out for each other even as they fight, argue and move from one scrape to another. Full of disasters and complicated relationships, the story is nonetheless endearing and we find ourselves empathising with the characters in the book.
