Due to their soothing (demulcent) and astringent properties, the flowers and leaves have been traditionally used to treat to lower blood pressur and topically to treat skin afflictions . The fleshy red calyx is used in the preparation of jams, jellies, and cold and warm teas and drinks. The leaves have been used like spinach.
