Not illustrated. 1903 Excerpt: ...a stricter and more consistent law of architecture; especially how he throughout makes use of gable-roofs instead of window-crownings, indeed how closely he connects the niches of the statues with the architectonic items. It is true, he made another mistake, in interrupting the pilasters with such niches, a mistake, which weighs against him, because his pilasters by the verticals, beingtoo prominent, have much greater importance for the architectural system of his facade, than those of the Otto-Heinrichsbau, which are intended to represent nothing but a pretty decoration of the facade. But such a defect has no great weight with a composition, generally so well executed, and occupying the first rank among contemporary works. It is hardly necessary, to allude to the fact, besides, that the more slender proportions correspond with the whole tendency of the building. It consists of three stories with two gables both on the south-and northsides. On the four gable ends there are genii with cornu-copiae and birds, and between these the goddess of Justice with sword and scales. In every gable two shields are introduced with the arms of the Elector and his consort Luise Juliane of Nassau-Orania. At the front, facing the yard, are four rows of statues of Members of the Palatine house: 1) In the Gable: a) Karl der Grofse (Charlemagne), first progenitor of the Palatinate family. b) Otto von Wittelsbach, the first ruler of Bavaria, who belonged to this family. c) Ludwig, the first Wittelsbach ruling over the Palatinate. d) Rudolph, the founder of this castle. 2) Between the windows of the third story two emperors and two kings of the house of Wittelsbach: a) Ludwig der Bayer. b) Ruprecht III.
