As she backpacked across this country, she was sure she would never return to it. At the airport, a palm reader told her that she would one day be back in India. She refused to believe him.
One decade flew by, and her husband got posted in New Delhi. Macdonald now finds herself back in the country she had dreaded. She almost dies from pneumonia and the illness makes her concerned about her mortality and raises questions about spirituality. She then decides that she would make the most of her stay in the land of contradictions. The author dives into the customs, rituals, and cultures of India. She tells her story from an insider’s perspective, rather than that of a tourist. She learns about different religions, faith, and festivals.
She meets a groups of American Sikhs who practice Yoga, and she also does a Buddhist Vipassana meditation course. She decides to visit the Kumbh Mela, and takes a dip in the Ganges. She also sees a Parsi funeral, and visits the Our Lady of Good Health Basilica in Tamil Nadu.
Her extensive travels slowly turns her from being a non-believer to someone who is eager to discover spirituality and faith. Sarah MacDonald is an Australian journalist, radio presenter, and writer. She has edited Come Away With Me and Take Me With You. The writer has studied Psychology, but has never practiced it. She initially worked with ABC NewsRadio, and then joined Triple J where she was a political correspondent, posted in Canberra. Later in her life, she went on to host their morning show.
She has also been a radio presenter for 702 ABC. MacDonald has worked on TV shows like Two Shot, Recovery, and Race Around the World. The author had moved with her husband to India in 1999, and spent two years in the country. She now lives in Australia with her husband, Jonathan Harley, and their daughter.
