The author, General V. P. Malik was the service chief during this period of war and has written this book, he says, "to set the record straight". He aims to refurbish his reputation, which took a plunging during the war because of the supposed profligacy of the Indian Army and its leadership. Pakistani forces apparently began the process of crossing the LoC over to Indian territory almost a year before the war began, entirely unnoticed by anyone, including the army forward units. The author starts by admitting his initial failure, in the gruff, no-nonsense tone of an Army General. He even states that all military personnel, even the RAW and Intelligence Bureau were equally clueless about the action. Rejecting the nuclear scare that Pakistan tried to initiate, the General goes on to give an insight into the actions that led to the war and the happening during the war sans the usual fallacies that the media always reports.
