Accidents happen and injuries to the body parts post accident are very evident as well. Sometimes we even have to lose a body part or two. Thus our body structure changes. Such changes have an impact on our brain which actually coordinates our body movements. This book, Phantoms in the Brain, is an attempt to understand that very thing. It has been authored by VS Ramachandran and published by Harpercollins in the year 2006.
Synopsis
This book traces the theories in which the brain functions. It is compiled by the leading experimental neurologists of the world. It uses a number of case histories that help the neurologists to tread a strange and yet to be explored mental world. From his repeated experiments on brain damaged victims, the author has discovered that the brain organises itself continuously in responses to the physical changes that have taken place. For example, when a man lost his right hand in an accident, he feels that a phantom arm is actually there with vivid movements. From an array of experiments, using Q-tips and dribbles of warm water, a young man has assisted Ramachandran to understand how the brain remaps after injury. The brain needs to create a story to sense the world and it does exactly that.
