Antimicrobial therapy is a dynamic subject; there is evolution in antimicrobial resistance as well as new drugs are approved and marketed. Several such sentinel events have occurred in the past 6 years. Remarkable is the increase in community-acquired methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections and the evolution and spread of carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacteria. To address these and other changes in antimicrobial treatment options and guidelines, it was considered necessary to bring out a revised edition.
