♕ About the Coin

★ Issued for a very short time between 1919-1921, during the reign of George V King & Emperor and after World War I.
★ Due to World War I, silver became very expensive. Soon the silver value of 1/4 Rupee(1/4 Rupee = 4 Annas as 1 Rupee was equal to 16 annas) coins issued earlier grew higher than the face value of the coin.
★ As an alternative to silver 1/4 Rupee Coins, these 4 Annas Nickel coins were issued.
★ 4 Annas denomination was first and last time introduced with this coin.
★ But since Nickel coins were much cheap than the silver coins, people refused to accept these coins forcing the British Government to discontinue these coins.
★ After discontinuation, a large number of 4 Anna Nickel Coins were melted away by the government.
★ Due to very limited years of issue and melting of the coins, 4 Annas coins are one of the rare denominations of British India.
