Synopsis
Set in the small village of Himachal Pradesh, the story talks about a little girl Binya, who gets a beautiful blue umbrella in exchange for her leopard claw necklace. She carries the umbrella everywhere she goes and soon the people of the villages become very fond of it. A shopkeeper named Ram Bharosa who owns a small shop becomes envious of the umbrella. He tries his best to buy the umbrella from Binya but she refuses. Learning of his master's desire, the shopkeeper's helper Rajaram tries to steal the umbrella and in the process gets caught.
The book has vivid descriptions and beautifully captures the beauty of Himachal Pradesh and life in a village. The story is simple and beautifully written.
About the Author
Ruskin Bond is an Indian author. Although he is of British descent, he was born in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh. He grew up in Jamnagar, Dehra Dun and Shimla. His literary career had a span of 40 years during which he wrote more than a hundred short stories, novels, essays and over thirty books for children. He received the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize when he was seventeen for his first novel 'The Room on the Roof'. He received the 'Sahitya Akademi award for his collection of short storied titled Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra.
