The book begins with the description of the family history of Claytons, which serves as the foundation. Then the book follows it up through its various changes to the present time. It gives an account of how Rollo made peace with the King of France, and Dukedon of Normandy was confirmed. It tells about the details of that settlement after a thirty years war. From that time, Normandy began to flourish, and during the time of its first six Dukes, it was one of the richest provinces in the world, notwithstanding its many wars. In this book, the author devotes a considerable space to the account of Ancestry of Mary Mainwaring. The details about the Pennsylvania Branch of the Clayton Family are also mentioned. The book includes an extract from the family Bible of the Late Hon. John M. Clayton. It contains Genealogical Table for six generations of the Delaware Family of Claytons.
About the Author
Henry F. Hepburn was an ESQ., L. L. B. of Philadelphia, PA. when the present work was written. He was a highly learned man who fought great many court cases for top bureaucrats. He held the Clayton family in high regards. He has written a great deal about them in the Papers of the Historical Society of Delaware, at Wilmington, in the year 1904. He has described about various expeditions of John M. Clayton in this work. He has learnt from his own experience that the Clayton family, being an ancient family, produced soldiers of valor and skill, preachers and monks of great learning, and lawyers and jurists of great ability. He has provided an elaborate account of the wills of various members of the Clayton family. Being an attorney, he had a considerable knowledge of their wills. In the present work, he has mentioned numerous abstracts of the wills and testaments with proper dates.
