About The Book -: This book deals mainly with the music styles of North India. Having been written at the beginning of the 20th century this reference to North India includes those areas which are known as Pakistan. Though it touches on the music forms of South India namely Carnatic music its man focus is on the music of the North. Author in this book has dealt with each aspect of Indian classical music and has traced its origins through history which he has taken to include the Greek influence that had once been very common in India. About The Author -: Arthur Henry Fox Strangways (1859 –1948) was an English musicologist, translator, editor and music critic.After a career as a schoolmaster, Fox Strangways developed an interest in Indian music, and in the years before the First World War he did much to bring Rabindranath Tagore to wider attention. He was an army officer and educated at Wellington College and Balliol College Oxford. For the next twenty-six years, he was a schoolmaster. During his time at Wellington he visited India, and became interested in Indian music. After he left Wellington he returned to India for eight months in 1911, collecting material for a book, The Music of Hindostan (India Society, 1914), which Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians described in 2013 as "still a classic on its subject.
