Synopsis
'The Namesake' was written by Jhumpa Lahiri in the year 2004. Earlier published as a novella in The New Yorker, this treatise was expanded into a full-length novel. This book explores many emotional and cultural themes dealing with many events in Calcutta, New York City and Boston. The main theme of 'The Nameske' explores is the nuances of the conflicting cultures between different religious, social and ideological distinctions. The Plot of the novel deals with the hardships and adversities of a Bengali couple who migrate to the United States to form a life outside of everything they are accustomed to. The main characters of the story are Ashok, Ashima and Gogol. After settling in Central Square, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, due to a series of errors the nickname of Gogol becomes his official birth name. This event turns to be an essential occurrence that will shape many aspects of Gogol's life in the coming years.

Nilanjana Sudeshna Lahiri born in the year 1967 is an Indian Bengali American Author who has written many postcolonial novels and short stories. Her notable works are Interpreter of Maladies, The Namesake, Unaccustomed Earth, and The Lowland. Lahiri, is a winner of two notable awards, namely, O. Henry Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
