Excerpt from The Psychological Bulletin, 1910, Vol. 7

Becher, continuing the work of Meumann, finds great individual differences in the sensibility of the internal organs.2 They are not so sensitive as the skin. In cases of sensitivity, localization is fairly accurate, the oesophagus is sensitive to warmth, cold, pressure, pain, and electrical stimulation; veins are sensitive to pain, the heart, arteries, stomach and intestines seem to be insensitive. Murray has shown the difficulty attending efforts at differentiating internal and external sensations, and notes the necessity of massing sensations in order to get the qualities.
