What Happened to the Bhadralok suggests that the arrival of new consumers of culture, drawn from the rural middle class, and the unorganized working-class and small business people from the city further accentuated the process. Parimal Ghosh taught History in the Department of South & Southeast Asian Studies, University of Calcutta, from 1979 to 2014. His other publications include Colonialism, Class and a History of the Calcutta Jute Mill Hands (2000) and Brave Men of the Hills: Anti-British Resistance & Rebellion in Burma, 1825-1932 (2000).
