Botanically known as Lycopersicon esculentum, the cherry yellow tomatoes are a bushy variety that produce golf ball sized tomato produce. The thin and tender skin of tomato fruit turns golden yellow on maturity. The yellow colour occurs due to naturally occurring genetic changes. The yellow tomato fruit has two seed cavities and these bitesize tomatoes are ideal for use in fresh salads, soups, pasta recipes or jams. The lycopene antioxidant in tomatoes can help prevent cancer. In addition to this, they are a rich source of Vitamin A, B, C and potassium which can help in reducing the blood cholesterol.
GROWING GUIDE FOR CHERRY TOMATO YELLOW SEEDS
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS
Cherry tomato yellow will require well draining rich soil so it’s best to add some weed free organic vermicompost to the soil. Sow the seeds at a depth of ¼ inches in a location that receives full sun during the day. The seeds will start to germinate in 10-20 days. Remember to harden off the seedlings before transplanting and staking will always help in better plant growth.
GROWING REQUIREMENTS
PESTS & DISEASES
The tomato plant is prone to diseases like bacterial wilt, early and late blight, leaf spotting, leaf mold, and damping off. The plant requires daily care and maintenance to avoid this. Pinch off affected leaves if any and keep the foliage dry as much as possible. Moreover, one should watch out for pests like caterpillars, snails with regular care.
SOIL
Well draining rich soil with a pH of 6 to 6.5 is ideal for growing tomatoes.
SPOT
Plant in location that receives 5-6 hours of sunlight everyday.
TEMPERATURE
The ideal temperature range for germination is 21 to 27℃.
WATERING
Water the planted area using bottom watering method only when the soil feels dry on touch.
HOW TO HARVEST
Cherry tomato yellow will start producing tiny yellow fruits after flowering. And in 70-80 days you’ll have deeply yellow coloured tomatoes that are firm on touch. That is when they must be picked. Gently twist and harvest them or use a pair of shears to cut them. If you plan to keep the harvest for a while, it’s best to harvest them a little early in their growth stage and let them ripe for a few days at room temperature. Refrigeration will help store the tomatoes.
