Introduction
Padlocks are the most conventional form of locks available. They are often used to lock doors, gates, smaller sizes are used to lock suitcases and even cycles. They are very useful o keep things safe or if you want to keep something tied to a spot. These padlocks are made from a variety of highly strong and durable material, their designs vary depending on the company that makes them.
History
One of the oldest forms of locks, the basic design for the safety padlock has been in existence since the early Romans (500 AD- 300 BC). They were also known to the Chinese as early as 25–220 AD. In more recent history, it was Harry Soref who is credited with the first laminated padlock (1920). In the 1930s, the method of die-casting became popular this was an inexpensive method of developing padlocks. The advantage of this method was that it allowed locksmiths to develop padlocks in a variety of geometrical shapes and figures and also allowed them to add ornate embellishments that became popular.
Design
A safety padlock basically consists of three components. These are the body, the shackle and the locking mechanism. The shackle is generally a ‘U’ shaped piece and it is this part that holds the structure that needs to be locked.
Systems
There are two types of padlocking systems, the integrated system and the modular system. Integrated systems involve rotating discs or lever tumblers. These are considered to be an older mechanism. The more modern mechanism is the modular system. These only have a plug with a part like a cylinder. This turns when the correct key is inserted into the space. Locks with this mechanism are generally self-locking i.e. do not require the key to be locked. Combination locks are another type of lock that is most often used when one is travelling to secure travel bags and suitcases.
