An oximeter is a portable, non-invasive method of measuring blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). Oximeters work by exciting near-infrared light into the skin. The amount of light absorbed depends on the degree to which blood molecules are mixed with oxygen and carbon dioxide in arterial blood. To determine each subject's SpO2, new users must first calibrate their device by taking an OCP test or performing it at home. Oximeters are constructed in a manner that allows the light from the handheld device to emit toward an oxygen-saturating color "dual cylinder" inside of it. Only yellow light is emitted by the red (right side) or blue (left side) LED duty cycle LEDs when first powered on.
