Introduction
The primary way to protect one’s hands while indulging in any work that could potentially cause injury is to invest in a pair of strong, sturdy and reliable safety gloves. They are often used by those who work at construction sites, by those who need to weld for a living or by those who work in laboratories or factories where they need to handle dangerous chemicals. They can also be worn at home when you are handling a material that could injure your hands. Gloves can be ‘mechanic's gloves’ or ‘work gloves.’ These gloves are coated with rubber to give you better grip especially in oily situations. They also provide some protection from abrasions.
Types of Gloves
For general purposes and protection. These are commonly used around the house while finishing up chores and so on. Latex gloves and Nitrile gloves are used for these purposes. They protect one’s hands from harsh dishwashing liquids and other chemicals that are used for household cleaning.
For general work, leather safety gloves are useful as they protect you from abrasions and keep your hands clean as well. But these will not protect you from sharp objects that can pierce through its material.
Kevlar is used to provide one with cut resistant gloves but as these are woven, they do not provide one with protection from punctures. To meet this need, companies have developed gloves that include stainless steel fibre to provide better protection. The best cut resistance is provided by a metal mesh or a chain mail. But these are used when the likelihood of receiving cuts is very high.
There are other gloves that are designed specifically for different fields, for example Cryogenic safety gloves are often used to protect one’s hands from hot or cold conditions and other gloves are developed for electrical resistance, vibration protection and chemical resistance.
The Fit of a Glove
You must ensure that your work wear fits well to minimise accidents and it is also important that your safety gloves fit you well for the same reason. This ensures that you are able to perform your best on the job and avoid mishaps. The danger of ill-fitting gloves could be that you do not receive the protection you need at a potentially dangerous work-site. Loose safety gloves are also in danger of getting caught in the machinery and giving you blisters. So it needs to fit snugly but not be restrictive in movement.
