Fitness accessories are basically those little bits or pieces of equipment that can make your workout feel so much more effective. Some common fitness accessories are mats, wrist wraps and hand grips for pull ups / chinups bars - these all contribute to having a better experience during workouts in plain clothes or bikinis! For example, one could get a set of cheap ones & buy them individually when necessary. (ie. for dips & pullups - and also work out in bra tops at the beach!) And then there are some accessories that you really NEED to have, such as knee sleeves (also known as compression shorts), TRX bands, and a stability ball.
Hand Grips / Wrist Wraps At least 2 sets of hand grips/ wrist wraps... If your gym lacks strength training equipment or dumbbells, one can use the resistance provided by weights in their hand. Hand grips are essential lifters because they help incorporate grip strength into the wrist cycle – which is often what distinguishes powerlifters from weight trainers who don't involve a full range of motion ("jerk" training). PERFECT TO ADD IF YOU WANT TO:
KNEE SLEEVE Another essential for your home gym... CONSISTENT FORM: you must be able to perform the exercise without your knee sleeves, or else they will NEVER become relevant to developing any kind of strength! Tighten / un-tighten the band form around your knees/thighs when doing squats (leg press) and presses. Trying dragging a sandbag behind you instead of thinking about bending down? You're going to hurt yourself in no time! I'm not sure how people even work out without these things...they are definitely a must-have within any strength program (you don't need them all the time when you're keeping up on cardio!)
STABILITY BALL /BALANCE BAG If a specialty gym is not available in your area, it's possible to make your own balance beam if you have free space in an overhead garage or attic. - It would be nice for that one exercise where there are no weighted bars at my local gym.
Ab rollers - This one IS essential! Once you start causing your body to sit in an unnatural position, the muscles have a hard time compensating.
Ankle Weights - Great for both legs, one can target each weak leg individually and balance them out. So you're left with two strong, evenly balanced body parts.
Cable curl machine - This is my favorite! Sit back on the seat and pull your arms into a single position around the top of the rails; then leverage that mass through an arc (a circle).
Apparel - suits, skirts, sports bras, and shirts are all important for training in general. They allow you to perform better at everything about your sport (running/swimming). For women, it also is a good idea not to look like the pregnant woman superhero doppelganger (superhero being referree to here for men.)
Weighted gloves - These can be used as single-handed exercise if necessary.
Arm & Thumb Weights - Heavy enough to be found at a gym, but light enough so they don't hurt the hands too much. I like these chrome ones because they weigh more than all of the two kids put together! At least that's what my husband told me after he first saw them.
Multi-Grip Plates - If you have limited weights available in your house/apartment, use this for secondary and large muscle groups.
Belts - These can be worn to do a lot of different exercises. For the most part, I wear mine with my workout clothes and as part of the back-to-school outfit.
Pilates equipment - If you have Pilates available in your area (gained tons while on this journey), that would be good for muscles that are facing more work than others like arms or calves.
Chest Expander - I use these for my chest. There are a million different types. It's up to personal preference and body type.
Exercise Mat - I like this one in particular because it stays intact, but can be folded easily over the waist when being used on floor exercises that require less stability from an exercise mat.
Pants/Bottoms - For general fitness wristbands work as well (although breathable shorts or leggings would be optimal if there is spilled milk or the unexpected). Just make sure they aren't too tight and match your clothes.
Digital - Oh gosh. I use this for cardio training and water weight loss. At the very least, these are good multitasking workouts - work out during your commutes, etc.
Workout Bow-Ties - Okay, so there is a reason why most boyfriends wear these: LOL! See above for more detail.
Dumbbell Racks - We already talked about why these are necessary, but if you don't have them, def get some.
Exercise Balls - These are a staple in my opinion. I work out with 2 most of the time: 1 ball on each leg and 2 small balls above my knees (in addition to adding intensity factor by focusing weight/pressure downward).
Gym Belts - Controlling the correct muscles is critical when doing heavy lifts. These help a lot in that aspect while working on your back and legs/butt as well.
Hula Clips - I honestly think these are good for anyone doing workouts at home or traveling with limited equipment. But if you want to work out heavier, cardio related stuff like running.
Gym Ropes - I didn't start with these; I actually used to think that a rope was for slackers. And obviously, kudos if you bought it before me or are just starting out your fitness journey and don't have one yet!
Foam Roller - Keeping the muscles engaged is crucial when working out, especially towards the end of long cardio sessions like running and cycling.
Hand Grips - Another way to control the muscles being worked out helps. Incorporating these in my basic exercises helps me get a lot more from each workout because I have better grip strength.
Homemade/DIY Equipment Everything else on our list would be irrelevant if you tried another gear used by professionals and amateurs alike!
Head Bands - Being able to put on 90% of the weight is a super important aspect that every lifting enthusiast falls behind.
Jump/Skipping Ropes - If you work out in cardio or want to do high jump/sprint training, then I'm sure you used these pads.
Knee - Up Straps - Trying a different lift is really tough if your legs are wrecked!
Power Plates (Weights) - Individuals who do heavy lifts may want hardcore weights to work out like me; since we're working out intensely four five days per week! Also applicable to those doing strength sports and powerlifting.
Locks - If you're a runner and have experienced shin splints during your marathon workouts, try finding a good lock!
Pulleys - If you want to build more strength without adding size (think bodybuilding), I definitely recommend these things.
Massager - You may want one for massage therapy or even just the area under your neck.
Med Balls - Ever heard of it? They are those little balls that you can buy from any drugstore and use in different exercises like glute ham raise, overhead press, chest fly/dips, or bicep curl! If you haven't used them yet – try them out now!
Massagers - They help in relaxing the body after workout or stretching the muscles or tendons.
Mouth Guards - If you work out against an opponent, make sure that you have a mouth guard on! You don't want to damage your teeth constantly crushing them when playing any sport – especially contact sports like football, etc.
Toning/Resistance Tubes - We're training to build our bodies with the right tools and then performing exercises that maximize muscle growth. The resistance tubes are a great tool to provide enough resistance for exercise variations such as lying leg curl, glute ham raise and the foot or ankle lift up + down (both types).
Gloves - If you do squats while wearing gloves – try using gloves when doing deadlifts.
Tummy Trimmer - These look like a tube of plastic with zippers across the front and are used to flatten or tone your abdomen. You can also use them for upper abs and definition!
Medicine Balls - Basically these balls weigh anywhere from 5lbs-10 lbs and I always think it's an intense workout when doing floor moves with one.
Wrist/ Arm Bands - Not for resistance, but you can use this product to aid in stretching your muscles after exercise and/or other activities. They're pretty useful!
Yoga/Exercise Mats - I know you might think that yoga and exercise mat do the same thing, but I prefer this type of mats over playing an actual game with them.
Rings - This is another great multipurpose tool to use during strength training! These are handy tools for doing back exercises or stretches after workouts or a workout in general. Also rings can help improve balance as well & speed up recovery time from your typical session at the gym.
