Introduction
Drilling is one of the most common machining processes used to create holes and circular openings in a variety of work piece materials. Drill bits come in a lot of standard diameters and lengths based on the specific application. They are also made of different materials of varying degrees of strength and hardness depending on the type of material they would be drilling through. This is a short open cylinder with saw teeth at the cutting edge and it removes material from the edge of the hole. What’s left inside then falls off, forming a hole. Hole saws are used to make large sized holes in thin materials such as wood, plastic and sheet metal. Wood Spade bits are used to bore large sized holes in wood. They have large cutting diameters and small diameter shanks to allow them to be used with drilling machines. The drill bits are usually made of High Speed Steel for drilling through metal and low carbon steels for drilling through wood and softer materials.
