History and Introduction
The air blower is also known as the ‘leaf blower' and was invented in the late 1950's by an American inventor called Dom Quinto for agricultural usage. It was marketed initially to spray plants with chemicals however, over time the manufacturers removed the chemical dispensing parts of the machine making it a regular blower that moves around leaves and dirt. It was then resold to the common household market as a leaf blower. There was a sudden boom in the market in the U.S. for these air blowers. This invention is also considered the basic design for the hovercraft and other designs over the years.
Basic Information
Air blowers can be powered by using an extension cord, battery or gasoline. They are typically designed to be hand held but come as mounted backpacks or even on wheels. Gasoline-powered leaf blowers usually come with a 2 stroke engine which requires a proper mix of oil and gasoline as fuel to avoid the engine from seizing. When the starter rope is pulled, it rotates the crankshaft which in turn initializes the piston and also creates the required voltage for the spark plug. The piston pumps fuel, oil and air into the cylinder which is compressed as the piston moves up creating a vacuum drawing more fuel, oil and air into the crankcase. As the piston moves down the compressed fuel, oil and air are expelled out and at the same time more of the above enters the cylinder and the process continues. This powers the air blower's impeller or fan which draws air in and forces it out of the tube, causing the blowing effect. Most blowers have a muffler which muffles the sound, a choke and a prime bulb to assist with starting the engine. Some air blowers come with an option of suction and also 4 stroke engines.
Uses and Advantages
Air blowers are basically used to blow away leaves or small debris at a much faster and more convenient rate than a broom. It is possible to use them as the initial design intended, as a sprayer. These power tools can be used for small projects and other amateur inventions.
