History
Sanders and planers are tools used to smoothen or put the finishing touches on a surface. The planer is a tool whose original design is nearly a thousand years old. During archaeological digs, planers were often found at the sites in ancient Europe and Asia. Planers were also found in Rome and these resembled modern-day planers in terms of design. Very often the planers from the Roman Empire were found in other parts of the world. History also shows that they were used in ancient Egypt, Cologne and Newstead for wood work. The first iron cast plane was produced by Leonard Bailey in the late 1860’s. The design was further evolved but Justus Traut and was manufactured by Stanley Works. Sanders are tools that use abrasion as a technique to smoothen surfaces. Electric sanders were designed to make the manual work of sanding down surfaces much easier.
Design
There are a number of sanders and planers in the market but the basic design is the same. In planers, the sole or the bottom of the plane has an iron blade that cuts the wooden surface. As the wood is cut it passes through the mouth which is an opening in the planer. To hold the planer firmly on the surface, there is a lever cap and the knob in front. The depth adjustment knob controls the extension of the blade through the mouth and the lateral adjustment lever ensures a uniform cut. The handle is known as the tote. When it comes to sanders, the electric sander is similar to the electric drill. The hand gun part of the drill is the same design that is used to create the sander. In some power tool kits, all one has to do is attach the sander that fits into the electric drill chuck and use it. It is however, possible, to buy a separate sander as well.
Uses
Though the basic use of a sanders and planers is to smoothen a wooden surface there are specific functions and uses for both. The planer is basically used to skim off layers of the wood and reduce the thickness of the wood. The sander is used for buffing a surface, making it smooth and polished.
